We think the best marketing experience is picked up in the real world. Which is why, each year we invite people who want to help their community to volunteer with in our advice service. Emmanuel joined us as a Volunteer Marketing Assistant from the University of Portsmouth. We asked Emmanuel to tell us a bit about himself and his time helping those looking for assistance. Thank you for your insight, and hard work, Emmanuel!
I am a student at the University of Portsmouth studying MA Business Communication for International Leadership. And live in the bustling city of Portsmouth! As part of my course, I am required to do a one-year placement. So, I was looking for a way to make a difference in the community.
I stumbled upon a chance to volunteer as a marketing assistant for Advice Portsmouth. It’s a local charity that supports and guides those in need. I have a strong passion for marketing and a compassionate heart. I applied for the role and was employed after a rigorous interview, basic DBS check and satisfactory reference.

My first day was filled with excitement and nervous energy. I met Mel, who is the Senior Frontline Advisor, for my induction. I was introduced to the staff, who are a mix of seasoned professionals and enthusiastic volunteers. They’re all driven by a common goal: to empower individuals facing various challenges to solve their problems.
As I settled into my role, I quickly realized the importance of effective communication and outreach in making a real impact. I collaborated with the team on their social media strategy, creating engaging content that highlighted the stories of those they had helped.
Marketing experience at Advice Portsmouth
As a volunteer marketing assistant, I have the opportunity to engage in various tasks. These significantly enhanced my understanding of marketing strategies within a community-focused organisation. My primary responsibilities include assisting in the development of marketing strategies, managing social media accounts, and helping to organise community outreach events. This hands-on experience allows me to apply theoretical knowledge from my studies to real-world scenarios. This makes it a valuable learning experience!
One of the highlights of my placement so far, is working on a project aimed at improving the services Advice Portsmouth offer. I am doing this by creating QR codes for feedback surveys. This includes collaborating with the team to create informative flyers and social media posts that effectively communicate the organisation’s mission and resources available to the community. I have learnt how to tailor messages to different audiences, ensuring that our messages are inclusive and impactful.
Additionally, attending community events provide me with insights into the needs and concerns of local residents. This experience has strengthened my marketing skills and deepened my appreciation for the role of non-profit organisations in supporting the community. My time at Advice Portsmouth so far has been both fulfilling and educational, equipping me with practical skills that I will carry into my future career.
