Stop Loan Sharks Week 2025

Stop Loan Sharks Week 2025 is an annual week where we raise the profile of the illegal lending of money.

What is a ‘loan shark’? Loan sharks are illegal lenders who often target people in urgent need of money. They often target those who are unable to borrow from legal sources because they are desperate. They charge very high interest rates and can use threats, intimidation and exploitation to get their money back. If you need help, you can reach out to Stop Loan Sharks. They are experts in on investigating and prosecuting loan sharks.

Signs you might be dealing with a loan shark

Here are some of the signs to look out for if you think you might be borrowing from a loan shark:

  • No paperwork or formal loan agreement
  • Loans in cash or direct bank transfers
  • Refuses to provide clear loan details for example interest rate, repayment schedule or how much you still owe
  • Takes personal items (passports, bank cards) as security
  • Use threats, intimidation or violence
  • Are not authorised by the FCA
  • If you have answered yes to any of the above, it is possible you have borrowed money from a loan shark
