Did you know that hate crimes have increased threefold over the last decade?
But what IS a hate crime?
A hate crime is a criminal act committed against a person, group, or their property specifically because of their real or perceived race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or other protected characteristics.
Hate crimes are motivated by prejudice, bias, or hatred towards the victim’s perceived identity, and they can take various forms. Like physical violence, verbal abuse, threats, harassment, vandalism, or intimidation.
So why raise awareness?
During this week, we aim to shed light on the stories and experiences of those who have been victimized by hate crimes. To amplify their voices, and to offer our unwavering support. We also seek to educate ourselves and others about the devastating consequences of hate crimes and the importance of reporting such incidents promptly.
How can Advice Portsmouth help?
Advice Portsmouth are a Third-Party Hate Crime reporting centre. Not all hate crime victims feel comfortable reporting their experiences to the police. This could be because visiting a police station can be intimidating or daunting to some people. Because of this, Third Party Reporting Centres have been set up as an alternative way to report a Hate Crime. We also offer confidential advice, and support victims along the way.
